Title: Happy Hallowe'en
Post by: NightHawk on October 31, 2010, 04:40:23 PM
If you're going out tonight to do some 'Trick or Treating', then be sure to keep safe.

And don't forget to keep a look out for those Witches, Ghosts and Ghouls.

Doors locked here. Perhaps I should have a pumpkin with a candle in the window?
Just watched John Cravens Country File on TV and they were explaining that the Irish started off the tradition - they warded off the witches and ghouls by lighting candles in turnips. Then of course they emigarated and took the business to US, and found Pumpkins were bigger and better! They were showing the Pumpkins being harvested (I think in the UK, didnt catch the name of the location)

We watched that Country File episode tonight as well George.  The harvesting was done in Spalding, Lincolnshire.

On our trips to the Norfolk area recently we actually passed this area, or at least saw signs to Spalding anyway.  It's just off the A17 road.

Its one of my (very few) favourite programs on TV Laurie. There was other special interest this week for bird watchers. I can see why you had once planned to move to that region.

Yes indeed George.  The wonderful spectacle of thousands of Knot taking off from the sand flats in Norfolk.  Just looked like ribbons of gold.  Wonderful.

Since this program moved from a Sunday afternoon to a Sunday evening we have seen more of them.

I didnt catch the name of the birds - no wonder! I have never heard of "Knots" before, certainly not (pun).
Yes, it was a spectacular sight on camera, and I'm sure it was a much more spectacular sight in reality.
Mind you, you had to be in place at dawn to catch them :o

Well worth the effort of losing a bit of sleep though to see such a wonderful spectacle of nature.  That's what keen birders do  ;)

The early bird catches the worm  :D

Certainly am George.

I don't sleep as long as I used to, so tend to make the most of my 'quiet time' in the wee early hours.  :D

Wouldn't you be scared if a bunch like this showed up at your door?
