Saw the specialist today and the toe is healing nicely as it should. Now allowed to remove, gradually, the special shoe and should be ok to drive next week sometime. Hurrah!
-
Great news there Eric. You must be relieved to hear that you will be able to get about more soon. :)
You'll be able to start planning all your gardening jobs now. :D
Laurie.

Great news Eric! Good timing - its a bit cold out there at present. Hopefully it will be better when you are ready :)
-
Just in time to enjoy the forthcoming Spring Eric, enjoy. ;D

Still somewhat swollen, but have manged to drive without too much trouble. Going for a longer trip tomorrow to see what effect that has. Walking is still not comfortable and the change in gait is playing havoc with my back, so having to wear my back support a lot of the time which is very inconvenient.
-
You are making progress, Eric, and I hope you are back to form again soon.
-
Good luck, Eric, spring and getting back to normal just round the corner now!
-
Well after 12 weeks of walking carefully and a certain amount of discomfort I can report that a. The bone is not setting as quickly as it ought and b. one of the titanium steel pins has broken.
So, got to go back in 8 weeks and see if it has set properly and the joint is immobile and then the pin does not matter. Or they do it all over again.
-
That is terribly bad luck, Eric, with spring on it's way and things to be done. I hope they sort it out as quickly as possible. How very frustrating for you >:(
All the best,
The other Eric
-
That is really bad news Eric. Lets hope it sets properly without you having to go through all that again.
Very best wishes.
-
A terrible setback Eric. :(
I hope you get sorted out soon.
Best wishes.
Laurie.

Sorry to hear you have been injured but very sorry to hear that mending is slow.
Our best wishes that things change towards a speedy recovery

How on earth can a Titanium pin break ::) must have been undersized :o
Lets hope that it heals itself so you don't have to endure another op.

that is bad news, hopfully they wil be able to sort it quick for you
-
The pins are only about as thick as a strand of spaghetti and do bend or break rather often. They are supposed to only be needed until the bone has set. The break is in one of the uprights of a pin, not the cross section (They are shaped like a staple {_} the other way up in my toe). The problem is not the staple as much as my bone not setting. Good job I have only broken fingers in the past (Bows to Hubris)
-
Thanks for explaining about the pin Eric

Any improvement in the foot now Eric ?
Malcolm
-
Not really, it is still painful and still cannot walk on it properly. Drove down to Solihull on Saturday and have suffered for it since. Thanks for asking.
-
Sorry to read that Eric. Looks like it is a very slow healing process.
-
You seem to be coping admirably with this Eric.
I hope you get on the mend soon.
Laurie.
-
What a bore for you Eric. Any improvement yet? Good luck.
-
At least it does not hurt, it just swells up if I walk on it more than a little. Driving is possible, but again, the greater the distance the more problems it causes afterwards.
Good job we are not having a visitation in the garden this year, there are a lot of jobs which are not being done, lawn edging for one. The trouble is that the odd walk I have developed is damaging my back beyond belief and that is PAINFUL.
-
Just thought you might like to know that despite the 8 weeks of Comfrey poultice, the bones have not fused. Got to go back in 3 months, if they have still not fused then, then it is probably more surgery.
-
Thats bad news Eric. I really do sympathise with you.
Very best wishes for a better report in 3 months time. It really is a slow recovery.
You must be feeling really frustrated not being able to be at full throttle in the garden.
-
that is bad news, hope it does not stay that way for long especially with it causing you back problems aswell
-
Why is it that, even though I was expecting it, I am really depressed by this?
-
Best wishes for a happy outcome Eric.
The long drawn out healing process has taken you, and us, by surprise. When you were expecting a speedier recovery, you've now had this set-back. Cause enough for anyone to feel depressed.
We'll be thinking about you.
Laurie.

Another three months of limping around, then if it is not healed having to have the pins removed, the joint scraped and this time a plate and screws put in, Then another 6 weeks to see if it heals after that. Then 3 months walking carefully after that.
I feel at the moment that this has ruined our way of life.

Hello Eric,
I have been wondering how you are progressing. I am sure it has been very frustrating for you. I was reminded of you because I have had a little taste of it myself. Not nearly as bad as what you have had to put up with but it gave me a little taste of the frustration you must have felt.
Well, three weeks ago yesterday I caught the inside of my left leg on what I could call the shoulder of a garden fork which was sticking upright in the ground. I thought no more about it but three days later, when we were all packed to go on holiday in Cornwall, a blood blister appeared that grew and grew to an enormous size so quickly that, being a Sunday, we went to A & E. in Wycombe Hospital. The upshot was that the holiday was cancelled, I had to sit or lie with my leg propped up for several days >:(
We weren't worried for ourselves but we were very disappointed for Benji. It was his 21st birthday treat. He was fantastically mature and understanding, however, and he even volunteered to come home and look after me!
It was very painful to walk for about ten days but luckily I have Anthea's crutches from her hip operation. For several days I had to have it dressed every day. Now it is about three times a week. It is much less painful now and I feel I can now see light at the end of the tunnel. They say it will take a while to heal because new skin has to grow over what is now a large raw patch.
I am on Warfarin to thin my blood and the nurse says that is why it developed as it did. Never mind, it could have been a lot worse!
Sorry to go into all the gory detail! ::)
Anyway, good luck with your foot. How is it now?
All the best
Eric

Sorry to hear that Eric, at least my toe has not caused cancelled holidays (We have never actually been on a holiday in 40 odd years). Sadly my toe is still not healing. I have been doing my best to ignore it and carry on as usual, but it sometimes catches me out and I have to stop for a while. Looks like I will have to go back in and have another op.
Hope you can get away another time.
-
Thanks Eric. Another op is NOT good news >:(
Good luck with it.
-
Thats very bad news Eric. It must be very difficult for you to soldier on through the pain barrier with that toe.
I hope your garden isnt getting out of control. Mine doesnt take long to revert to nature without continual attention.
Sorry to hear about your injury Eric (Mr Hardy this time) and we all know you love to spend time with your grandchildren - you must have been very disappointed to have to cancel that holiday.
Best wishes you guys!
-
Very bad news for both Erics. :(
Here's hoping that in time you will both heal fully again.
Laurie.
-
Thanks, George & Laurie. I think mine is likely to be a much shorter problem than the other poor Eric. There are definite signs of improvement with me. No gardening yet though. I am longing to cut the grass. It looks quite odd now after the rain (which we have had in good quantity at last). It looks quite odd because the bits that were parched are still short, but greening up a bit now, and other bits that had a bit of shade are romping away and the grass is quite long.
-
Went to the specialist on Thursday. At last the toe seems to be healing. There is definite bone visible between the broken bits. Still painful and still need to be careful with it, but at least it is mending. 6 months before next appointment and no apparent need for another op. Hurrah.
-
Great news Eric. I have to say you were surprisingly sprightly on Monday, but as you explained walking is still a major problem.
Hope you are back to full power soon :)
-
Just caught up with this post. Sorry to hear about your problems, Eric and Eric! It seems to be a year for broken bones! I broke my little toe in March. I got out of bed in the night (as you do ;)) and just stubbed it in the dark, and it hurt at the time, but usually with stubbed toes, the pain wears off after a short while. This didn't, and when I put the light on about an hour later, the toe was at a very funny angle! I put a plaster on it (yes, really......... ;D), and went back to bed. The next morning, I decided I ought to have it checked out, so went to A & E. Result of X-ray - broken toe! They can't do anything for broken toes, apparently, so they strapped it with sticking plaster to my next toe (high tech stuff....) and told me to get on with it! Anyway, fortunately, it healed quickly and is now back to normal. I hope everything will be back to normal too for you guys very soon. :-*

Well what a lot of forum members hobbling about ::). I am glad you are mobile again. I'm pleased to hear that the other Eric is on the mend too. I had my last visit to the doctor's surgery last week, the last dressing was removed, everything looks healthy again and I am back to normal. The lawn has suffered from weeks of neglect and now I am going to see whether I can get the lawnmower started.
-
It's so nice to hear good news on the Forum.
We all know you'll both soldier on, get back in your gardens as best you can, and hopefully fully recover (just like Chrissie did :D ).
Laurie.
-
They say bad luck comes in threes. We've had Eric, Eric and now Chrissie :o
Lets hop (typo pun!) thats the end of it but hey, take care everyone :)
Its really good to read that Eric H and Chrissie have made a good recovery (Hope the lawnmower started OK Eric!)
We'll watch this space for news of Palustris. Best wishes Eric!

Well, at least mine was deliberate. Glad everyone else is now footloose and fancy free!
