The hard drive on our old machine was failing, so we had to either have it replaced or buy a newPC. Went for the latter. Not sure if it was sensible. having a lot of problems getting it to work the way the old one did, despite both being Windows 7 machines.

How do I get this one to look like the old one?
For the life of me I cannot remember half the programs we had on other old one, like a Spell checker for example (my typing is BAD!).
Cannot remember how to get a particular program to run at all, tried everything but it just will not work, yet ti did on the old machine and it was me that put it on there.
Can I run Restore from the external drive to inf some missing files, even though it was a back up of the old machine without damagibng this one?

The same PCmover program I mentioned in the other thread can set up a new computer from an old one. You have to order the program together with a physical cable (called a Laplink cable)

I have not tried this but judging by how good the program was on the upgrade on the same box I would recommend it.

For that one needs to be able to get the old computer to actually work!

not "failed"

yes, it needs to be able to be read remotely (via the connecting cable).

In general replacement hard drives are very cheap and it might be less effort to get the old one running even if only to help you set up your new computer.

I just had a hard drive failure on my laptop; I spotted this early enough that it was still running. A new 500Gb drive cost me 42.00 (inc VAT)!! I managed to copy all the information and then had to correct the bad areas from a backup.

It is very frustrating not to be able to get this machine to work like the other did. Even the spell checker does not work.

What program are you using as a spell checker?

The spell checker on this forum is good Eric.
I did a google search and I can see some useful tools.

I searched for the thread (using Search!) and nothing came up except this post. Please would you post the details again?

Also [George] as I will be upgrading my PC soon, will the same product activation code still work?

The question is a simple one. I have a program on disc which runs on the old Windows 7 machine after I did something to make it work. I can Install it on this machine, but for the life of me, I cannot remember what I did to make it run before. Tried opening it in Compatability mode, but nothing seems to work. Each time I start it up, all it does is Re-instal itself, then will not work. Previously, it had to install each time to work and it did that and made a Restore point on the computer, then it ran ok. Any suggestions?
It must have been fairly simple as I did it without any reference to anyone else or any books etc. 4 years ago though, so no memory of it.

Try right clicking on the executable which runs the program.
A dialog box will appear.
Click on Run as Administrator
Does that work?

No, tried that first.
Have now managed to get the Demo mode to run and since that allows us to play the full game in the same way as we did before I am going to give up trying to get it to work.
Somewhere in the program files must be the one which starts off the program proper, but I cannot find it at present.

Get into that Program Files folder.
Try all the files with a .exe file extension.

There are no files I can find with a .exe extension, not even the Demo one had it.

Can you see the file extensions in the view you are using?

If not, you can change you folder view options to show them.

The exe files will be listed as Type= Application.
Try running the Applications.

You mentioned this in one of your previous postings:

When you use your preferred method to open the folder containing those program files, I have referred to what you see as a view.
The view will have column headers like:
Name
Date Modified
Type
Size.

The file names in the Name column - can you see the file extensions (e.g. .exe) etc?
Under they Type column, look for files of type Application.
Then refer to my previous postings.

Did try to alter View to include extensions.
