Lets take one plant photo as an example:
Berberis thunbergii
In your published WPG project, click to select the plant.
In the position where the photo should appear you will see a little box with an X.
RIGHT click on that image
Click properties.
Youll find the URL it is looking for is:
http://www.ideasforgardens.net/gardenplantsbypost/BERBERIS%20THUNBERGII%202.JPG
Ive logged in, and checked the server.
The image file name is:
http://www.ideasforgardens.net/gardenplantsbypost/berberis_thunbergii_2.jpg
If you click on thje above link youll see the image on the server.
I had this problem with Malcolm (I think) and will need to check over our correspondence to see how it was resolved.
The problem is related to the file name for the image on your computer.
Can you copy and paste the file name here so can see.
Somehow the system is substituting each underscore (possibly a space) with %20
PS: I see youve managed the "Grouping" style. Well done again. Web site is looking real good!
-
in the published online page picture properties are http://www.ideasforgardens.net/gardenplantsbypost/BERBERIS%20THUNBERGII%202.JPG
if i generate in IG then preview picture is showing and properties are file:///C:/igdata_sets/web/postal_plants/BERBERIS%20THUNBERGII%202.JPG
file name of pic on my pc in my pictures BERBERIS THUNBERGII 2
checked pic that is showing online Fagus sylvatica properties http://www.ideasforgardens.net/gardenplantsbypost/FAGUS%20SYLVATICA.JPG
IG generated/view properties file:///C:/igdata_sets/web/postal_plants/FAGUS%20SYLVATICA.JPG
file name of pic on my pc in my pictures Fagus sylvatica
yes been grouping, did not even use the tutorial as i find to learn by ones self is much better because you have less chance of forgetting, but your tutorials have come in handy

Ive done a test.
Ive dragged a file by name BERBERIS THUNBERGII 2.JPG to the temp folder on the server
It shows up exactly with that name
Are you sure your image file names dont have underscores. e.g.
BERBERIS_THUNBERGII_2.JPG
-
pic from my pc named exactly BERBERIS THUNBERGII 2 copied and pastedfrom picture properties in my ftp programme
picture is same name BERBERIS THUNBERGII 2 in the files upload section renamed to berberis_thunbergii_2.jpg, does that help
-
I dont understand where those underscores are coming from.
Can you that one file only from your Web Project folder into the folder on the server.
Does it change from BERBERIS THUNBERGII 2.jpg on your computer to to berberis_thunbergii_2.jpg on the server?
Try looking at your settings in your FTP program.
In CuteFTP, click Tools, then Global Options
In FileZilla, on the Menu, click Edit, then Settings
Check your settings in Transfer Rules
Aaargh!
Ive checked in your folder on the server and see youve renamed the files!
OK, that solves the problem temporarily, but it means we didnt learn why it wasnt working.
-
well i fixed it copied pic of plant in my pics and renamed it as one word then in IG web make new thumnail from pic on pc that actually duplicates the plant delete the first plant with pic that was not working and hey presto pics are showing, now i need a lie down, i have no idea why it was happening on some and not on others as i tend to name my pics the same way i.e Acer Something,
yes i tried renaming files in my folder but that did not help in my options i have unticked replace spaces with under scores and convert to lower case always these are they only options i have
Phil
also had to change list of plants in ftp programe by deleteing the ones that were not working
-
You got there by renaming, Phil, but we have learned something.
RE:

That's what was causing the problem.
Anyone reading this, please beware.
As discussed above, please check the settings in your FTP program (as described above)
The WPG expects the name on the server to be EXACTLY as on your computer. If your FTP program changes spaces to underscores, then you will get the same problem as Phil.
In Windows operating system, text case is irrelevant.
PHOTO.JPG is the same as photo.jpg
On some non-windows servers, you have to be VERY careful with text case.
PHOTO.JPG is NOT the same as PHOTO.jpg (jpg now lower case)
You can have both those entries in the same folder.
Slip up with a letter in the wrong case, and your URL doesn't work.
To Phil
Now you have changed those setting, please do a test when you have got your wind back :)
I'd like to be sure it will work with file names with spaces, and it will re-assure our WPG'ists.
-
will do a test and let you know, watch this space
-
Well just done a couple of plants beginning with letter E and pics uploaded ok, will see how we get on with more later this week
-
The Escalonia photo is:
http://www.ideasforgardens.net/gardenplantsbypost/ESCALLONIA_LANGLEYENSIS_APPLE_BLOSSOM.JPG
Does it have underscores on your computer?
Try a photo with spaces Phil, and lets see if that is now working with your new settings.
-
yes to the under scores will do some more later today
UPDATE
Check out plant numbers 3, 4 and 15 all plants picture names have gaps in on my pc i.e Festuca amethystina Large Blue Fescue plant number 3 and all seems well

My experience of filename structure, especially since the newer versions of Windows Operating Systems, was that you could have filenames up to 256 characters long including spaces - not that any sane person would want any that length anyway.
So, if you're only going to be dealing with files on your own PC, you can get away with having spaces in the name. But when you come to uploading those files onto independent servers for example, then the filenames are handled differently, because other systems expect a specific file structure.
I would not advise having filenames with spaces in them, even on your own PC, as at some stage you may want to move those files elsewhere, and a long re-naming process would have to be done to ensure compatibility.
Underscores instead of spaces is what I would advise as a general rule of thumb for all filenames, whether images or text documents.
Laurie.

Good to see we have managed to solve that problem. Thanks for posting one with spaces.
Ive looked on the server, and see that both the files have a number of spaces, and to clear any other ambiguity, do not contain underscores and do not contan %20.
To summarise, the solution was to check the settings in the FTP program being used to upload the files to the server.
In CuteFTP, click Tools, then Global Options
In FileZilla, on the Menu, click Edit, then Settings

I agree completely. Thats a good standard to work to
I have to make the program cope with every permutation. You'd be amazed how much extra programming that entails.
Theres more work handling error events than in writing the "normal" code.

George, you do a fantastic job there. I take my hat off to you as a programmer. The way you're able to manage these workarounds is amazing. 8)
Keep up the good work and we'll all support you to our best abilities. ;D

Thanks Laurie. That makes it all worthwhile.
Its very encouraging to know the software is being used and appreciated i

to laurie good bit of advise on the underscores may have to start renaming differently

Nice to get that tidied up.
Filezilla is also free. It was discovered by greenfinger, so we have him to thank for introducing us to that neat litle piece of software.
