I dug the first stalk yesterday. I couldn't believe how good they were ;)
British Queens - the most popular early variety in these parts.
They have to be cooked by steaming as the skins crack and you end up with mush if you boil them.
Cod, potatoes and peas with parsley sauce. I ate FAR too much. The potatoes were delicious.
Peas were also fresh from the garden :D

We dug up our First Earlies the other day. 20 foot row produced about 20 pounds of tubers, say about a third of what we would expect. The soil in which they were growing was dust dry. Good job we do not eat that many potatoes.

I can hardly believe this. I dug another stalk on Thursday for my son. Many of them were huge so I told him to weigh them when he got home. 12 lbs :o Now there may have been one or perhaps 2 from the next stalk.
Unfortunately, the 2 biggest were boast in the very centre. One was HUGE - the biggest I have ever seen!
They made deep fried chips and apparently they were delicious.
Theres some reward for suffering so much rain in these parts in summer. No wonder spuds are so popular in Ireland.
