Herm Island
« on: March 09, 2013, 06:10:52 PM »
As mentioned on the Sark post, Herm Island is famous for its gardens and natural flora too, and were winners of the RHS Britain in Bloom Gold Award in 2002, 2008 and 2012 .  I hope to post a few pics taken last September but here's a link to be going on with:

Herm island is currently covered in snow!  The White House Hotel below will be completely white !

we had lovely weather last September

we were able to watch the Air Show over Guernsey from this lovely location

this is a path through part of the hotel's garden

There were many plants growing wild which I didn't know the names of;  I especially liked these

It was nearing the end of the season so many plants had gone to seed.

There were lots of unusual plants growing in the walls.

And the lichen was amazing!

Despite being very limited in my walking ability I managed to travel safely at my own speed along flat paths by stopping to sit and  rest on the large stones left at intervals along the way.  I haven't included these pics as I don't think you want pics of me, only the flora ;)

There is a neolithic burial site on the island.

Eventually we reached one of the many beaches;  this one has level access so I was able to go for a paddle :)

And so the current bad weather continues to affect Herm.... latest news:

"It's another day of snow and high winds on Herm! We currently have no active telephone lines or internet connection, and there are no boats on or off the island unfortunately. Our team in Guernsey will be answering any questions on Facebook and Twitter if you need any information. Find us on Twitter: @hermisland
Stay safe!"

It'll be interesting to see the photographs when they're properly back online :)
