Access to file problem
« on: November 14, 2010, 12:09:15 PM »
Reading John's post re. specimen naming and George's replies, I clicked on the link/s provided there but couldn't access. Just got a 'File not found' notification. Also tried inputting the URL directly into Firefox/Google but with the same result. Anyone else had this problem? Solution anyone?

Cheers,

Trevor

Same for me Trevor.

Tried http://www.ideasgenie.co.uk/Garden-Software/    couldn't find any reference to links to vegetables there.

Better wait till George surfaces after his late night with just one glass of beer ?? it might take a while to recover.  ;D ;D  hic

I think this is what you were looking for Trevor:
http://www.ideasgenie.co.uk/Vegetables/

I "decomissioned" that server recently - had to make some cutbacks -everbodys at it nowadays ::)
I also opted for an alternative hosting option with my supplier for the www.ideasgenie.co.uk website
www.garden-software.co.uk now points to a location on the ideasgenie server.

Thanks for letting me know the link wasnt working!
Ive now fixed it and will have to go through the forum article on the Vegetables project looking for more broken links

Sorry I didn't see your reply yesterday till a minute or two ago George but yes that was the link. Though since moving last I haven't got a vegetable garden any longer (I really miss that aspect of gardening), I was just interested in what was happening re. the vegetable 'tutorials/lessons/?' that I kept seeing references to looking at past postings.

Cheers,

Trevor

Theres a good exercise in using the Tasks program and an application for the Specimens feature, and a pretty much unknown feature inside the Events umbrella.
Recommended as a tutorial type exercise Trevor (and all of course) ;)

Complete mystery to me but I tried the same URL (link) as refered to in John's posting and couldn't get anything. Then typed the same one direct into Firefox with the same (non)result. Clicked on the one in George's reply and got straight through no problem. Interesting to see if the same thing works with Malcolm's gear. Reminds me of an incident with a neighbours new TV. She couldn't get it to work, I tried and it froze during tune-up. Then it wouldn't switch off with the main on/off switch. We had to unplug it in the end to 'switch it off'. The latter words in inverted commas because when I plugged it in again it was still switched on. She took it back to the shop. It worked fine when they plugged it in, tuned it in, and it's worked fine since. Very strange. Anyway, hope that the link above works for you too Malcolm.

I fixed the links Trevor, so the now functioning link referred to in Johns posting is not quite as mysterious as that TV incident (Malcolm is the man best equipped to comment on that - capacitors perhaps?!)

As in pretty well all white goods and tv's these days, they are driven by "computer boards", and that is just because they are cheaper for the manufacturer to have made than mechanical timers and switches.

I had a customer ring today re her 18 month old washing machine, that would not start when the start button was pressed. She new there was a supply at the wall socket as she had tried a table lamp in it. and also checked the fuse in the washing machine plug was ok.

She rang the manufacturers first, and was told to leave the machine disconnected from the socket for about half an hour  >:( then try it again, needless to say it made no difference.

The on/off switch on the machine is just a very small switch surface mounted on the circuit board with extremely small legs soldered to the copper tracks on the board. The switches have been known to drop off. ;D or some of the legs become unsoldered. The big on/off button you press on the outside of the machine, presses on this small switch.

I went to one some weeks ago, if the customer pressed hard enough on the on/off switch it would start.
I tried to resolder the legs of the switch with a very fine soldering iron and magnifying glass. After I had done that, the machine wouldn't work at all. ::) so it really needed a new circuit board. Easy you may think, but some of these boards you need to programme them with a laptop and special software, or a special dongle adaptor.
It was left with the customer to decide if she wanted the manufacturer to do this at £100 for a visit plus parts. I drove home pennyless.

One reason why I want to pack up at 65 years old. By then I doubt any of the white goods will be repairable anyway.
Unless the government steps in and forces manufacturers to produce better made machines, just think how un green the waste of chucking a machine away after two years is.

I agree Malcolm - oh for the days when you could get under the bonnet of a car and fix a number of things even without specialist knowledge. Guess we have to live with how things are. One thing gets easier, another harder or impossible. Nature of life I guess.
Did you try that link to the Vegetable articles by the way? Got straight through with the same URL since George altered it.
