Our wpg showing well on Google
« on: October 16, 2009, 11:58:11 PM »

I recently did some modifications to our website.

If you search on Google whole of the web for Lyn and Malcolms Garden, the wpg is listed number 2 in the search results  ;D

The wpg never came that high before, so the mods must have done some good.

Excellent!
That means Google is picking up on the Introduction page very well.

As you know the WPG uses Pageframes.
Can Google see into pageframes?

Ive done a very quick search on Abutilon 'Bella F1' (one of the plants in your WPG)
On Page 3 of results, (not that I ever look at that page in a well know popular "news"paper  ;D) I find this link:
http://www.plantguide.lynandmalc.co.uk/plantmenu.htm
That means the Plant List pane is being indexed.

When you click on that page, do the links work on clicking?
Ive had to do Right click on the links and then click Open in New Window to see the Plant
Many visitors wouldn't do that.
Same click problem with you?

Now I have to change the WPG generator to put a link on that page to take the visitor to the home page of your WPG Plant List site, in addition to the link at the bottom which says: More Plant Albums
We'll get there, Malcolm!

Yes the links do work for me, but only takes you to the plant page, no menu or header panes. Same when I use the open in new window version.

Putting a link near the link to More plant albums, would mean a long scroll down the menu pane to find it on our wpg.

Could you not put a prominent link on the top of the menu pane, and at the top of the plant panes.

We are getting the surfers to the wpg but not giving them the full use of it, so they might not come back.

As a matter of interest, before I did the alterations to our website, I did 9 different searches on Google, and noted down where that search came in the results, that was a day short of a month ago

All the searches were All the Web not just UK

I did the same searches this morning, with the exception of one search, all were better or the same.

Dorset garden                           was 24    now 30
Dorset open garden                   was 41    now 34
Garden pictures                         was 6      now  6
Garden pictures uk                     was 9      now  7
Garden pictures Dorset               was  3     now  3
Garden open day Dorset             was  7     now  5
Small garden Dorset                   was  1     now  1
Exotic garden Dorset                  was  6     now  1
Cottage garden Dorset               was 126   now 20

I was pleased that the cottage garden Dorset result had improved, as Lyn was not impressed with the search a month ago.
Bear in mind that there are a lot more cottage gardens in Dorset than exotic gardens.

Its a lottery isn't it!
There are so many factors Malcolm, particularly when people do actually surf for garden related things.

Garden Pictures
That is incredibly good positioning for that search term Malcolm
Did you notice that Chrissie (The Gardener on our forum) was at No 1?

I tried
Garden Photos
I was surprised (and a bit embarrassed) to see that www.ideasforgardens.com is at No 4
and another one of my domains www.flowerphotos.co.uk/ (points to same website) is on the second page.
Embarrassed because I haven't updated that website in ages.

What baffles me is how you can do so well on one search term and be right off the radar on another. Do you find that?

Thanks for the Page Frame Link. We shall be looking at all of that!

;D ;D ;D ;D Will be good for you and us.

Regarding the search on Garden Photos.

I had a look at our Keywords in our html coding on our home page and we didn't have "Photos" in there.
But we do now  ;D  And have added some text on the home page mentioning "Photos"  Will be interesting over time to see if we get a better search result for that. I have made a note to remind me to look in a month or so time.

Malcolm!  ::) :D

I hope that adjustment works. Indeed, it will be interesting.
But hey, don't go climbing above ideasforgardens.com now! ;D
