Forde Abbey, Dorset

If you ever get to Dorset you must try to visit Forde Abbey. It began as a Cistercian monastery but later became a country house and is still lived in. The grounds are delightful.

It does indeed look like a wonderful place to visit Eric, with some great architecture.  ;)

Also, some good plant photos.  More challenges for our members to identify.

Beautiful indeed, Eric.
Youve been to so many wonderful houses and gardens. We are very fortunate that you took your camera, and took so many exceptionally good photos!

Yes, I'm looking forward to the ID of that plant selection! The Red hot poker is well know, and the Eringium, but I dont grow any of those others. I'll stick to the software and allow the experts to make the suggestions  ;)

It's been quite a few years since we were there. They had quite a good nursery, we bought some plants.  :o

Thank you for the identification Malcolm. I have added them to my post.

We have been three times over the years. The first time we were there we started chatting to someone who was working away in a rockery and discussed various matters. He was very charming and it was only after quite a time we discovered we were talking to the owner. That I really do call "hands on".

Just came across this posting of yours again Eric, and decided to revive it.

Did you ever get to visit again since your original post in 2009?

I was checking its location on the map in relation to where we live in the New Forest, and it's pretty much 67 miles west of us - about a 2 hour drive.

Maybe one day we'll venture across there  ;)

2009 was our last visit, Laurie, and I would certainly enjoy another visit, but it becomes increasingly unlikely. It is certainly worth the effort if you can make it. You will have to pick your time to suit the plants you would like to see. I expect the autumnal colours will be good soon. It is straight inland from Charmouth and the Jurassic Coast, but I am sure you have looked at your OS Map already. There are lovely coastal paths in this part of the world which take you up the Golden Cap (627 feet above the sea) and the cliffs are the highest on the south coast.
