Title: Photos
Post by: Palustris on January 22, 2022, 04:49:16 PM
I know I sent George lots of photos of plants for the Database. Been going through my discs for another project and there are thousands of plant images. Any use for the Data base? May well be duplicates for the ones I have already sent though.

Yes of course Eric.
Its a project I look forward to resuming.
Can you make a copy of the disks?
I can send you some blanks CD's if you wish.

Can copy the discs easily enough. Got plenty of them so no problems there. What size of photograph is preferable

File size less that 500 k if the quality is still good Eric.
Means I can squeeze more onto a DVD for distribution in the Master Database for use with Ideas Genie (http://www.ideasgenie.co.uk) and Flower Genie (http://www.flowergenie.co.uk)

Right. No problem. May take a while as I am doing another project at the moment and that will need finishing first.
Take a look at  https://www.geograph.org.uk

Most of the photos are about 220 kb is that ok. I can make them more by increasing the DPI, but that is a lot of work.

220 kb is fine Eric. That's a good size for cramming onto that Master Database DVD.

Have you linked your photos (the ones of plants) to plant names in Ideas Genie Pro 6 (http://www.ideasgenie.co.uk) ?

No, taking a long enough time to go through and put names on the photos.

The ones I have just saved are a bit bigger. Try as I might I am struggling to get them down to the size. Don't know why, but the programs I have tried do not seem to alter the images in the way I expect.

Have you tried the resize program in Ideas Genie Pro 6 (http://www.ideasgenie.co.uk) ?

Under Tools tab, its the program Resize Photos - GA651.
You make an empty folder to receive the resized photos.
Then you pick the folder with the large photos and click one of the resized button (usually Resize All)

The program does NOT change the original photos which makes it even better.

Try setting Set Max Height and Max Width to the same value, e.g. 800 or 1200 and see what size it produces.

Forgot about that program. Main problem is that I reduced the original images to upload them to Photobucket when we had poor Broadband and making them a reasonable size again makes the images grainy. I have the originals, but unnamed. So I will have to go through and add the names before I try anything else. Time consuming.

Wish there was some way of getting these images to you without having to send a disc. Google photos is not free any more.

Do you have Dropbox?

No. New one on me.
Disc is almost full. Over 1300 images so far. May be repeats, but hard to know without doing much more research. Found a really useful program which puts Upper case letter at the front and changes Upper case of the rest to lower case, if you see what I mean.
PS. Looked at Dropbox. Only allowed 2 gig free and so far I have 4 gig of images for you.

Need to split them up into folders of a more manageable size for Dropboxing.
Then upload one folder at a time.
After uploading Folder 1, I log in to Dropbox, download, we delete at each end and you go again with Folder 2 etc..

Its the easiest solution.
No need to worry about the upper case, lower case thing Eric. Its simply the name of the plant I need for linking.
Dont know how I could ever process 1300 images! Thatis an amazing collection of photos.

Will give that a try.
You may already have a lot of the photos in the Data base. I have been going through  all my discs and just renaming and saving every photo I find.
