Part of a wee poem my sister userd to rythme off.

Well the grass ris well last week, but Ive just finished that first cut of spring.
Exhausted!
4 barrowfuls of grass off the front lawn.

Now Ive got my breath back - off to do the edges

Called into B&Q today for a box of bonemeal. Suddenly, a whole pile of plants and bulbs jumped onto my shopping trolley!
I got work to do!

I know where our boidies is! They are n our roof space doing clog dancing at first light!

Our grass has not even begun to grow yet, so no need to cut it and the edges take two days at least so they can wait till nearer the day. Spent the day spraying weedkiller on dandelions and ground elder. Have put Pathclear on all the paths and sown a few own saved seeds. Planted out some replacement alpines and some Astilbes etc. Now all I have to do is prepare the ground for the planting of the trees and shrubs what we have been a purchasing of. Got som many can't even remember their names.

Glad to see I'm not the only one with a heavy load  :)

Ive finisdhed the edging. Already the garden is transformed. Now Ive got to go and fill hoof holes.
Two options.
1) Cut some sods and heel them into the holes.
2) Fill with =soil and sow seed. Have bought a bag of seed already - almost £8 for one kilo  :'(
What would you do?
Going out now to see how practical (1) is.

Some patches need reseeded, so it seems like a good time to get to work.

It's been a great day here too.  :)

Temperature got up to 15°C, sunny and dry, so spent the afternoon in the back garden.

Grass got the first cut of the year, trimmed the edges and had a general tidy up.

Kathy sowed some bedding plant seeds - Cosmos 'Antiquity', Petunias, Calendula, Coreopsis, Marigold, Cornflower and a couple of others.

Was tempted to take some more photos but was too tired.  Maybe another day.

Laurie.

Weve had that weather during the week, but a little cooler today. It was fine and dry though, perfect for the garden.

Its nice when you get the seeds under way. I'll be one day behind you with my first sowings.

Did you sow all your seed in seed trays?

Sown in trays, apart from the Cosmos 'Antiquity' which has been sown into a 2 inch pot on its own, and the Cornflower has been sown in its own pot as the germination time is from one to three months.

Malcolm, I kid you not.

Perennial Cornflower Centaurea dealbata - germination can take 1 to 3 months.

Here's a link for someone selling it - http://www.nickys-nursery.co.uk/seeds/pages/page4-cornflower.htm

I'm glad I asked, as I though the same as Malcolm. Ive a packet of the annual variety to sow directly outdoors. They give a really good show.
Keep us informed on how the perennial variety does with you Laurie.

BTW: I came across that seed supplier recently. Prices are very good!

Okay guys, my fault.  I should have given the full name but I didn't have the seed packet to hand at the time.  :-[

Sorry for the confusion.  You don't miss a trick do you.  ;)

That was just a coincidental fluke.  I did a search on the Cornflower variety to find a site that described the germination period to post on the Forum as 'proof'.
This was the first web site that appeared, so I just chose that one.

Nothing like a bit of confusion to generate debate  :D

There was no need to go into full detail, Laurie. If you'd asked what plants I bought at B&Q yesterday the answer would have been much the same.

I'm going to make that a bit easier for all, if you get the names into IG Pro  ;)
You'll be able to generate a text list, or a web page, of a list of plants.
I havent forgot your requests Malcolm! They will be part of that sweep of changes.

Hi everyone,

Spring has definitely sprung which kept me off the computer for the first part of last week, hence my silence.  To my utter annoyance however, later in the week I had a heavy fall. My shoulder took the brunt of it. Nothing broken according to the x-ray and I am not in any more pain now but I can't raise my right arm above the elbow. Perhaps I pulled a ligament but the long and short of it is that all the outdoor jobs I should be doing I just can't. I can't even start the lawnmower!! Utter frustration  >:(. All I have been able to do is to help fill pots and hand them to Anthea for potting on the tomatoes and courgettes. All you people are getting on with things and all I can do is enjoy the sunshine  8)

I'm really sorry to hear about your fall, Eric. That is really bad luck, but on the brighter side, its good news that nothing is broken. That would have been a disaster!

I hope it frees up in a day or two and you can get back in action again.

Best wishes!

I am sorry, George, I should have made it clear that these were not taken in the garden, they were taken by the river. I too think the blossom is some kind of prunus. The tree is some sort of willow, I think. It was on the river bank. I am not sure that the leaves look long enough or sharp enough for a weeping willow although there were plenty of those about like this large one

Very fine little chinoiserie, Eric, that white blossom. And keep on enjoying the sunshine, if any is left ;)

Thank you Andre. It clouded over today but the garden has had some much needed rain now.
