Paeony Ancluvita. Anyone have a stab at an id of this for us please?
On the reverse of the label is JH1745 Kazakstan
Been asked if anyone can put a proper name to this pant.
TIA
-
Strange one Eric.
Nothing comes up in Google, RHS plantfinder etc as I'm sure you already know. Is the second part of the name a species/group or a cultivar name? I noticed that in your post you used an upper case 'A' which would seem to confirm that. Something of a mystery eh?

Not a name I recognize but the code JH1745 Kazakhstan looks very much like a collections number, it was collected by someone on a plant hunting trip. You could try contacting the Hardy Plant Society or maybe Kew they may have it recorded somewhere.

Will try the Paeony Society. Difficult to know since there is no date on the collection label.
-
I agree with Paul that its a collectors reference.
Thought at first it might be Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker
Found this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Dalton_Hooker
BUT: Just did a search on the text by viewing the source of that document.
No find for Kazakstan or Ancluvita
-
I think you have it there George.
Interesting guy Sir Joseph, he was born at Halesworth which is about 20 miles from me.

As I understand it, each collector (or group of collectors on an expedition) have a unique reference.
There is a reference list of collectors at the front of the RHS Plant Finder hard copy.
I checked my copy of 2005-2006 and was rather surprised that there was no entry for JH
If anyone confirm that JH is indeed the reserved collector code for Sir Joseph Hooker then that would be a good start.
-
Now been told it might be JH1945, the writing is not that clear. Still Kazahkstan though. N one has come up with a name yet.
Hooker did not collect in that part of Asia.
-
On the RHS website, I searched for collectors and got the up to date list:
https://www.rhs.org.uk/rhsplantfinder/documents/CollectorsReferences.pdf
Noted a certain JH in the listing was Halda, J.
Surfed on "halda paeonia" and got this:
http://www.peonies.org/Paeonia.html
Although species of Paeonia are found in the wild throughout the northern Hemisphere, they are mainly associated
with Asia and Asian gardens.Josef Halda is one of the few botanists who have traveled to see every known peony species and subspecies in the wild, often in extremely remote areas
Josef J. Halda
I suspect you might find that plant in his book The Genus Paeonia
What do you think Eric?
-
Good thinking. I have got this book and had a look. There is no mention of Kazahkstan nor of a Paeony by that name, nor any collection numbers. Odd.
-
Odd indeed Eric.
Did the book describe and give names to the plants he collected on his expeditions?
-
Not a thing. Only a Key for deciding which one it is and descriptions of the species etc. No mention of any collecting by him.
-
Perhaps it will be in his next book ;D
Are we talking about a garden worthy plant here, or is it something more of interest to botanists or hybridisers?
Any photos?
-
No photos or anything only the label and a cry for help.
The only Paeony recorded in Kazakhstan in P. anomala, so one has to assume that that is what it is and the label is wrong or corrpted by being attached to the plant.

RE:

Matter of interest again Eric - what is the source for that information?
If the label is wrong, they have got it well wrong, haven't they ::)
-
Flora of Kazakhstan.
True!
