Are you a "Rose man" ?
We are very lucky here in N Ireland. We have one of the best Rose Gardens in the world (in my humble opinion) right here in Belfast.

I managed a couple of visits in 2008. Keep meaning to visit more often for photos, as all the Roses are carefully labelled.

I detest Roses. I cannot for the life of me understand anyone growing a plant which is insect ridden ,disease prone, thorny, flowers which turn to mush in rain and bleach colourless in the sun, dead twigs for 6 months of the year.
Try advertising them like that and see how many you sell!

The endearing property in that list which I concur with most are the thorns. I can NEVER, EVER get close to a Rose without getting a scratch. They seem to attack me. The idea of sub planting them with anything that requires weeding is now a no-no for me.
OK, I also hate the diseases they succumb to. I don't have time for a spray.
On the plus side. Nothing, but nothing surpasses the scent of a good rose.

Roses can be difficult but I don't think they are all without merit. I have found species roses to be virtually trouble-free, perhaps not the most exciting flowers but they don't need much pruning apart from dead-heading, are usually disease-free and quite often produce good hips. Species I have enjoyed growing include rugosa, moyesii, forrestii, roxburghii and sericea. I would agree though, that a lot of hybrids are more bother than they are worth.

I can think of at least two other plants which have far better scents. Daphne and Dianthus and neither of those has thorns!
