Help with the wpg please
« on: February 16, 2009, 04:34:29 PM »
On our wpg at http://www.plantguide.lynandmalc.co.uk/

In the group Lyn's cottage garden. Lyn decided she didn't like picture 1 and 3 (something to do with the pictures for my part of the garden look better, and I did it on purpose) ah well to keep the peace.

In GA032S08 I unlinked the two pictures she didn't like.
But blowed if I can remember how to get the new pictures back into the group.

So any help would be appreciated, I am sure the groups were the subject of one of Georges challenges, have searched but not found.

I think you need to click on thumbnails in GA032S08 you will get a warning that this will delete or unlink current picture i think (going from memory here) click ok you shoild the be able to select from the pics the next screen shows you,

failing that you may have deleted the pic you want if you have, go into the edit that plant screen select photos at bottom click on find photo this will open up your pictures find the photo you want click on link photo click on done, the photo should then show if not click on photos at bottom again select photo name then click on make main,

then go back into reveiw and go for the photo again in GA032S08 thumbnails select pic and that should be sorted

excuse the vaugness but i am going all from memory, hoprfully george will be along soon to put all right  ;)

Get into GA032S08
Click Achillea (Remember - All your garden photos above Achillea are "tied" into that plant.)
Make sure you have a Photo linked to Achillea
Then, (happens when you click on any plant with a photo) you will see an extra button
More
When you click on that, you'll see options to add:
More Plant Photos
More Garden Photos
More Other

Does that ring a bell?

Thanks to both of you for your replies.

George. I had forgotten that the photos were linked to Achillea. I managed to work out the titles and the order ok

I am FTPeeing  ;D  the wpg now, will take about 10mins to do the updated files.

As a matter of interest, the Pagelog2.ftp file is 6679kb

I managed to get Lyn to do a few notes on about 1/3rd of the Clems and all the Roses, which should appear now.

I have already started to take some of the pictures of the plants we don't have pics for in the wpg, as and when they flower.

I would like to put in a request for the ability to print a list of the plants that.........

A} Do not have pictures

B) Do not have review notes

C) Plants that are in the database, but not used in review. I did remember after all  :-[

D) Plants that are in the database but are not allocated to a garden area

I have compiled the above manually for this year, so perhaps something to think about for next if possible. With the amount of plants we have on the wpg it is a job to keep track of A and B above.

The wpg and ftp have done their magic now, I hope Lyn is now happy ::) I haven't shown her the two pictures I chose to replace the ones she didn't like  ;)

Thanks again

Malcolm

You dont need to FTP the Pagelog2 file.
Its not required on-line
Its BIG!!

Yes, thats a good idea. I'll do that as soon as I get a minute.
You'll have thought of (C) by then, I'm sure  ;D

Ah, yes. Its good to chop and change in that case then  ;)

If it helps in your defence, tell Lyn I approve!
I like No 2, in that it shows up your lovely lawn. (It was there before I think?) I know its cottage garden style, but having that lawn in the frame is restful and sets the plants off. You need both of course, to get close to those fantastic flowers.
Looks to me like your motto is "Grow what you grow, grow well." Everything there is just LUSH!

The 2 new pics were approved as "ok" just before I read your post George, thanks for your support anyway. ;D

Our little "Motto" in the NGS description for our garden, uses the words...."A garden that is loved and it shows" you have seen that in the lushness of the plants, and for instance several judges in competitions we have been in, have said "The quality of your plants is superb"

I have just started (amongst other things) to print out the plants in garden areas. Then I go out in the garden and check that the plants are still with us (alive). All the plants in the garden are labeled, so it is just a matter of looking in the garden area and ticking off the plants against the printout.

Was suprised to find plants in the garden area, that are not on the printout. Ok was my fault, the plant is on the database, but not allocated to a garden area.

So have added "D" to the list of printouts in my  post above, that would be usefull in keeping track of where over 1000 plants are in the garden.

I always do this check on the plants, at this time of year, before the plants get too big and hide the labels, looking at our garden now, it looks like Label city, but give it another couple of weeks and the labels dissapear.

Why do we label all the plants, well to start with it saves a lot of time when we have an open day, visitors can usually find the label of a plant they are interested in, saves having to ask us. How many gardens have you been to, no labels and no one about to ask what it is. We have been to many.
Do we lose many labels?. No not from visitors taking them, more from us burying them when we top dress the beds each Spring.

Will do Malcolm. The list grows, but I'll get to it.

One tip on D
Try adding using GA004 or GA037
Each time you add a plant using those programs, the program puts the new plant into the "Holding Bed" garden area.
If Holding Bed doesnt exist, the program creates it.
That way, you can check the Holding bed from time to time, and move the plants from, there into a garden area.

I did a quick check and find that GA027 doesnt add plants to the Holding bed.
Is that the program you normally use for adding plants?

As luck would have it, yes George.

I think the problem was when I first entered all the plants. For some reason I used GA027
If we obtain any new plants now, and they are not planted straight away, i put them into a holding bed which is really a garden area I set up when I first entered the plants into the database.

GA027 is quick add, so good for you to add that bulk of plants initially, Malcolm.

When you add plants with GA004 and GA037, you get to GA100S00
Its intended for use with the Master Database.
You type a few characters of the Genus, and when the Genus comes up in the Master field, you can then interrogate the Master.
If you find the plant you want to add, you simply click a button.
Have you tried that method yet?

I hadn't tried that before George. There are several ways in IG pro to achieve the one goal, I must admit, having mastered one of the ways, I have stuck to it. And even then had to make a few notes to be able to repeat it next time.

The end result with the Wpg output and a database etc is fantastic, and well worth the effort.

I have also noticed that if you search in Google for Garden Pictures, on the web, not just UK. Our website comes in at about 8th place in the search results, pretty good considering we are only an end of terrace garden.

As a matter of interest, if you where to do the same search, are the results the same?. I suppose they should be, unless there is some hidden trickery involved with the search engines.

Give it a try sometime when youve got a half hour to kill, Malcolm  :D

Yes, No 8 for you here on searching Garden Pictures.
Not surprising at all, pretty good considering you are a VERY SPECIAL end of terrace garden.
Keep up the good work there you two!

I see Chrissie also comes up on Page 1 with the same search term.

Aren't "we" the clever bunch, eh!

Thank you again George.

It is a great help in maintaining a large database like ours.

I found 36 plants that had not been allocated a garden area.  ;D

Now something your software won't be able to help with.........finding where those 36 plants are.
Unless you are on this run of magic that has been on the forum for the last couple of days  8)
