Has anyone experience of germinating and growing on seedlings of Embothrium coccineum? I managed to get 14 seeds (out of 20) to germinate. After 4 weeks I pricked them out into what we call "native plant " compost, a low P mix, that I mixed with coarse sand and perlite (one part of each). Day by day the seedlings have died off, now one remains. Comments much appreciated.

I did receive this email from Jessie - my very good friend (through this software) from Singapore (which she refers to as the Island below):
WE have quite similar plants which we grow as hedges throughout the Island.
Its Ixora.
It needs plenty of sunlight and not much watering as we have plenty of rain
and sun. When there are two months of no rain, and once it rain, these
flowers blooms like crazy , creating a wall of RED! These plants are grown from cuttings.
I noticed that it is also known a Chilean Firetree ..meaning it like hot weather ?

Its a tropical plant of course, whereas Embothrium is hardy as old nails here in the UK ;D
Ive seen a number of large specimens over here (Ireland).

Not to worry George, the remaining seedling survives, I've hidden it away in the hope that it will continue to grow without me continually looking at it. We grew Ixora when we lived in Queensland, quite vigorous and with very bright orange flowers.

Any photos of it George? If you have, please send me one or two as attachments in an email.
I'd like to add it to the Master Database. I don't have any Ixora in that database (yet ;D)

Back on the subject matter - I'm pleased you have one survivor.
Please update this topic from time to time to let us know how it progresses.
Its into summer time in Australia now, isn't it? Does that make it easier to make it thrive?
I guess its pretty hot in Tasmania at this time of year.

No luck with the Ixora. The seedling continues to grow now 6-7 leaves. Not too hot here, where we are it doesn't get above 30 very often. Looking out the window - clear blue sky,but a fresh breeze. Good day for weeding!
