Great, Trish. Glad to find another Guardian reader ;)

Don't work for me. It just leads to an empty purse, sore back, filthy hands, frustration and disappointment.

Yes, I can relate to that :) Good find Trish.
I hate to admit it but there is some pleasure in weeding. Rather fortunate, as it amounts to easily 90% of my gardening time.
Even my son made a surprise statement when he spent a while in the garden here, describing the experience as therapeutic :)
If anyone wants to feel the happiness, I can supply an abundance of the "materials" :D
As for Mycobacterium vaccae, that seems to work for my slugs and snails ;D

I have just spent some time crouching over our gourgette plants removing a plentiful supply of weeds. My 86 year old back is feeling it and I am beginning to think I agree with the other Eric on this score ;D. There was a time though when I felt differently.
Incidentally, those wretched muntjac deer have been removing the leaves :( so I have just put some netting over them (I know, stable doors and bolting horses and all that) :)
