The windswept tree in Newcastle, N Ireland

Here's a couple of shots of a fantastic tree in Newcastle, Co Down (taken by Julian with his iPhone).
Newcastle is a popular seaside venue, 20 miles from my home.
In my younger day, we used to go on Sunday School trips to this spot - lots of very fond memories :)
Even as a boy, I remember noticing how unusual this tree was.
Newcastle has had extensive work done to the "promenade" over the years, and I'm very pleased to say this tree has been preserved.

Yours truly poses under the tree with James waving, Naomi and Mary (my better half) walking along in the background.
I stepped it out to get a rough idea of the extent of the overhang - 14 steps/yards 8)
As you might guess, there can be a brisk sea breeze now and again ;D



and another one from the other side of the street with a view of the sea in the background.

That tree has done its darnedest to resist being broken by the winds - awesome  8)

Indeed Laurie.
One thing puzzles me - its "lie" is almost parallel to the sea front. The prevailing wind must blow off the sea and take a right turn up that seafront street ;D

That is amazing, George. As you say, it is strange that the prevailing wind is not from the sea.
