Skipped Standing Orders
« on: February 27, 2017, 12:15:28 PM »
Hello all Genie Geniuses!

I'm sure this must have been asked and answered before but I'm unable to find it, so apologies for being a bore, but when I skip a standing order for any reason, it crops up again for payment the next month.  Can anyone please explain how I skip an SO and ensure it remains skipped?

Hi Ronnie

Welcome to the forum!

Yes, using the program Process Standing Orders-BS429 in either version of Bank Genie you will see the skipped record reappearing for a month.
However, when the next payment is due, you will see two records - the skipped record and also the record for the current month.
When you have two months showing, do this:
Use the Skip button on the older record.
Process the current month record.
Once you do that, restart BS429. The skipped record will not reappear.

All true but I gave up worrying about it. Now when I want to skip one of those I just set the amount to zero and reconcile it.

Thanks Barry.

I have added that one to the Bank Genie "ToDo" list guys. It looks like it could be useful to make skipped items disappear.
I'd like to invite you folk to think about a solution and offer suggestions on how to achieve that.
My thoughts:
If hidden by accident, they need to be retrievable.
That could be done with a checkbox with the caption: -Show Skipped Items.
Then provide a Reset button to recall selected skipped items.
Could do all that in the program Process Standing Orders - BS429

Could be useful.  In my context I have some rarely used credit cards so most months the directr debit is not activated. Thus it makes sense to have it as a zero amount. Other contexts could well be different.

Heres another tip.
Do this test in a backup (or a Test) database .
When running BS429, Check the checkbox Show skipped records so you can see better what is going on.

Ive set up a monthly standing order to be paid on the 15th.
I set the start date to Nov last year.
I ran BS429 on 1st March 17.
As expected, it showed 4 due items:
  • 15th Nov
  • 15th Dec
  • 15th Jan
  • 15th Feb

I skipped 1,2 and 4 above and processed ALL - resulting in only 15th Jan being processed.

I restarted BS429.
It showed the item 15th Feb ONLY in the due list, even though it was skipped.
1) and 2) have now been permanently skipped, since 15th Jan was processed.

I still want to skip Feb.
I set the date picker to 16th March (so it now shows 15th March as due.
a) I skip 15th Feb and b) I process 15th March.

When I restart the program the date picker defaults to todays date 1st March.
15th Feb appears as Due.
Why?
Because (currently) it doesn't check for processed transaction past todays date.

BUT:
If I (again) set the Date Picker to 16th March - the list is empty - nothing is due.
Why?
Because the program now checks for processed transactions up to 16th March, sees the 15th March transaction is processed.
It then knows I have skipped anything before that date and shows an empty list.

OK, all a bit difficult to follow perhaps.
I will work on the program to improve the Skipped S/O's feature.

I think I would go for something very simple.

a) if a standing order is skipped it is not shown again

most of the time that is what the user wants

b) BS429 has an option "show skipped standing orders"
Permit any to be "unskipped" and then processed normally to allow an older one to reappear.

Well that wasn’t very polite of me; asking for help and then cluttering off for nearly a year, having completely forgotten about it!  So this is both a huge apology along with many thanks to George and Barry for taking the trouble to post solutions.  George, your first is elegant and I’m sure will work the next time I need it.  Your second, however, had my brain(?) hurting about half way through, so I might just stick with your first.  But the award for sneakiest (and easiest) solution must go to Barry.  Nice piece of lateral thinking, dear lad.  Many thanks again to the pair of you.  Interesting to see that the subject brought a number of readings, so it’s gratifying to know I haven’t been alone in this.  Merry Christmas and Happy New Year everyone!
