Downloading program updates

(1/1)

ideasguy:
Robert (invited to register as a member) has just reported that my instructions to choose the Run option doesn't work in his Browser.

I opened Firefox and opened the URL to the download.
To my consternation  :o only two options were offered:
Save and Close

In Internet Explorer, there are three options.
Run, Save and Cancel
Always?
But of course not. Its the world of computers we live in.
In some versions its:
Open, Save and Cancel

Note that Run has the same effect as Open
Save always does the same thing (see below).

To date, I have been advising users to click Run or Open

Since we have now discovered that this option is not always offered, this posting of "enlightenment" may be useful.

About downloads with Program Updates
Best explained by example
Ive updated BS150 (The registration program) in Bank Genie to a new and very much simplified level 8)  (to overcome the problems with Internet Explorer 8 ) as discussed here:
http://www.flowergenie.co.uk/ideas/forum/index.php/topic,1189.0.html

The update comes to you in a "package" named
BS150-dl.exe
The format is identical for all my software products.
BS150 is "wrapped up" inside this package (similar to a ZIP file)
You have to "open" the package BS150-dl.exe to extract the program BS150.
In that respect, the Open option is very descriptive.
Choosing Open or Run (when available) downloads the file AND when downloaded, continues with the installation.
This is by far the simplest method.

Taking the SAVE option.
This presents a level of great difficulty to inexperienced computer users .
You have to choose where to save the downloaded file, and remember where you?ve saved it.
When the download finishes, find the file you?ve downloaded.
At this stage, you've saved the package. The "pressie" you are looking for is inside the wrapper.
Double click on it.
The Wizard starts and allows you to extract the program BS150
Follow the prompts
When finished, Start Bank Genie, start BS150 and check that you have the expected Version level.

Theres another discussion about differences with Firefox in this topic:
